## Data interpretation questions with answers

Data interpretation questions are a reading test with arithmetic attached. The sets below mix tables with caselets, which are the two formats bank prelims actually use, and every walkthrough names the cells it read before it computes anything — because the marks are lost in the reading, not the division.

Free, ungated, no email. This is the data interpretation questions with answers PDF — the same 12 questions as below, with every worked solution at the back, ready to print.

### How to use this set

The 12 questions below are ordered the way an exam block is rather than easiest-first: two gentle openers, then a run of medium, and a hard one every sixth question — 2 of the 12 sit in the hard band. The set mixes data interpretation (table) and data interpretation (caselet), in the round-robin the paper itself sets rather than one form at a time.

Work each question on paper before you open its solution. The walkthrough is the method itself, step for step, so reading it first turns a practice set into a reading exercise and teaches nothing. If you are stuck on the method rather than on one question, the method guide is a better place to start than the next question: [Data interpretation: read, then compute](https://computeprep.com/drill-types/data-interpretation).

### 12 data interpretation questions with answers

Every question below was generated by the same engine that mints the ComputePrep daily timed drill, and machine-checked before it reached this page — a multiple-choice question validates its own answer against its own options at generation, and ships only with a walkthrough attached. The walkthrough is the engine's own.

#### Question 1

By how much does Returns differ between 2022 and 2023?

Units sold and returned by a distributor: (figures in units)

Year Sales Returns

2021 80 10

2022 80 80

2023 130 70

- 70
- 80
- 6
- 10
- 8
- 2022 Returns = 80, 2023 Returns = 70.
- Difference = 10 — subtract within one column.
- Answer: 10.

#### Question 2

How many walk-in patients are admitted?

A clinic saw 54 patients, split between walk-in and referred in the ratio 4 : 5.

Of the walk-in patients, 25% are admitted.

- 6
- 24
- 18
- 9
- 30
- The ratio 4 : 5 has 9 parts, so one part = 54 ÷ 9 = 6.
- Walk-in patients = 4 × 6 = 24.
- 25% of 24 = 6 — take the percentage on the PART, never the total.
- Answer: 6.

#### Question 3

What is the combined Attempted and Correct for English?

One candidate's mock-test record, by section: (figures in questions)

Subject Attempted Correct

Quant 550 350

Reasoning 150 200

English 350 200

GA 300 150

- 550
- 1350
- 560
- 562
- 350
- Read the English row across: 350 + 200.
- Combined = 550.
- Answer: 550.

#### Question 4

How many pens units were sold on Tuesday?

On Monday a stationery shop sold 220 units across three lines — pens, notebooks and bags — in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5.

On Tuesday, pens sales rose by 25% while the others were unchanged.

- 44
- 33
- 55
- 66
- 11
- The ratio 2 : 3 : 5 has 10 parts, so one part = 220 ÷ 10 = 22.
- Monday's pens = 2 × 22 = 44.
- The rise is 25% of 44 = 11.
- Tuesday's pens = 44 + 11 = 55 — the question asks for the new total, not the change.
- Answer: 55.

#### Question 5

What is the average Card per store?

Transactions handled by four stores in a week: (figures in transactions)

Store Cash Card

S-1 750 450

S-2 300 300

S-3 600 50

S-4 150 200

- 1000
- 450
- 252
- 257
- 250
- Column total = 450 + 300 + 50 + 200 = 1000.
- Average = 1000 ÷ 4 = 250 — divide by the number of rows, not by the number of columns.
- Answer: 250.

#### Question 6

How many owner-occupied flats are on the top three floors?

A society has 100 flats, split between owner-occupied and rented out in the ratio 2 : 3.

Of the owner-occupied flats, 25% are on the top three floors.

- 9
- 20
- 7
- 25
- 10
- The ratio 2 : 3 has 5 parts, so one part = 100 ÷ 5 = 20.
- Owner-occupied flats = 2 × 20 = 40.
- 25% of 40 = 10 — take the percentage on the PART, never the total.
- Answer: 10.

#### Question 7

By how much does Online differ between Feb and Mar?

Orders received by a retailer, by channel: (figures in orders)

Month Online In-store

Jan 120 40

Feb 110 50

Mar 70 90

- 40
- 36
- 180
- 37
- 110
- Feb Online = 110, Mar Online = 70.
- Difference = 40 — subtract within one column.
- Answer: 40.

#### Question 8

How many monthly subscribers renewed early?

A streaming service has 600 members, of whom 75% are annual subscribers.

Of the monthly subscribers, 20% renewed early.

- 30
- 33
- 150
- 90
- 120
- Annual subscribers = 75% of 600 = 450.
- So monthly subscribers = 600 − 450 = 150 — the question asks about this group, not the first one.
- 20% of 150 = 30.
- Answer: 30.

#### Question 9

What is the combined Cash and Card for S-1?

Transactions handled by four stores in a week: (figures in transactions)

Store Cash Card

S-1 200 150

S-2 750 450

S-3 650 450

S-4 750 150

- 1200
- 200
- 2350
- 350
- 361
- Read the S-1 row across: 200 + 150.
- Combined = 350.
- Answer: 350.

#### Question 10

How many fiction books are hardcover?

A bookshop stocks 240 books, split between fiction and non-fiction in the ratio 5 : 7.

Of the fiction books, 75% are hardcover.

- 180
- 25
- 75
- 68
- 69
- The ratio 5 : 7 has 12 parts, so one part = 240 ÷ 12 = 20.
- Fiction books = 5 × 20 = 100.
- 75% of 100 = 75 — take the percentage on the PART, never the total.
- Answer: 75.

#### Question 11

What is the total Men across all 4 branches?

Staff strength at four branches of a bank: (figures in staff)

Branch Men Women

North 300 200

South 350 250

East 400 250

West 100 100

- 300
- 800
- 1150
- 1137
- 288
- Add down the Men column: 300 + 350 + 400 + 100.
- Total = 1150 — read down the asked column, not across a row.
- Answer: 1150.

#### Question 12

How many tablets packs were sold on Tuesday?

On Monday a pharmacy dispensed 480 packs across three lines — tablets, syrups and ointments — in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5.

On Tuesday, tablets sales fell by 40% while the others were unchanged.

- 48
- 168
- 92
- 120
- 72
- The ratio 3 : 4 : 5 has 12 parts, so one part = 480 ÷ 12 = 40.
- Monday's tablets = 3 × 40 = 120.
- The fall is 40% of 120 = 48.
- Tuesday's tablets = 120 − 48 = 72 — the question asks for the new total, not the change.
- Answer: 72.

### Where these questions come from

Most free practice for this topic is a scanned upload or a blog quiz, and neither can tell you a question has exactly one answer. That is the one thing this set can promise: it is minted, not typed. The engine behind it serves ComputePrep's daily timed drill, so the questions here are the same shape as the ones a live round would give you — and there is an unlimited supply of them, which is why this page can be regenerated rather than padded.

If you want the method rather than more questions, [Data interpretation: read, then compute](https://computeprep.com/drill-types/data-interpretation) covers the approach, the traps and a worked table. This page and that one deliberately answer different questions: that one is *how do I solve these*, this one is *give me data interpretation questions with the answers*.

### FAQ

#### Should I read the whole table before starting?

Read the headers and the units, not the numbers. Knowing what the rows and columns mean, and whether figures are in lakhs or thousands, takes ten seconds and prevents the mistakes that cost the whole set. Then pull only the cells each question asks for.

#### What makes a caselet harder than a table?

The data is in prose, so you build the table yourself. Do exactly that before answering anything — sketch the rows and columns in the margin. A caselet answered by scanning back into the paragraph for each question takes three times as long and is where the errors come from.

#### How do I speed up percentage-change questions in DI?

Compare before you compute. If the question asks which of five values rose the most, the crude ratio is usually enough to eliminate three options, and only then is a precise calculation needed. Computing all five is what puts candidates behind the clock.
